The short answer
It depends on your N-400 filing date. If you filed on or after 20 October 2025, you take the 2025 test with 128 questions. If you filed before that, you take the 2008 test with 100 questions.

How to find your filing date
Check the date you filed Form N-400 in your application records. The filing date decides which civics question bank applies. It is not the date of your interview. If you are unsure, check your records with USCIS before choosing study materials.
What is different about the 2025 test?
The 2025 test draws from 128 questions. The officer asks up to 20 questions aloud. You need 12 correct answers. The officer stops at 12 right or 9 wrong.
The 2008 test draws from 100 questions. The officer asks up to 10. You need 6 correct answers.
What stays the same?
Both versions test civics knowledge through spoken questions. Reading and writing are separate parts of the English test. The app includes both question banks, so you can study the version you need.
What if I am 65 or older?
Special consideration applies if you also have 20 years of permanent residence. You must meet both requirements when you file. You study a designated list of 20 questions. The officer asks 10, and you need 6 correct answers.
