How many questions are on the US citizenship test?

The short answer

The 2025 test has 128 possible questions. The officer asks up to 20 and you must answer 12 correctly. The 2008 test has 100 possible questions, the officer asks up to 10, and you need 6 correct.

Checked against USCIS on 12 September 2026

Which question count applies to me?

Your N-400 filing date determines the version. Filing on or after 20 October 2025 means the 2025 test. Filing before that date means the 2008 test.

Test version Study questions Asked at interview Correct to pass
2025 test 128 Up to 20 12
2008 test 100 Up to 10 6

When does the officer stop asking?

On the 2025 test, the officer stops at 12 correct answers or 9 incorrect answers. You do not have to answer all 128 questions at the interview. That is the study bank, not your interview length.

What happens if I do not pass?

USCIS gives a second opportunity to take the part you did not pass. Its policy describes a second examination between 60 and 90 days later. Read the linked USCIS policy for the rules that apply to your case.

Are reading and writing questions separate?

Yes. Reading and writing belong to the English test. You read one sentence correctly from up to three. You also write one sentence correctly from up to three.
